Management Planning and Control

Management Planning & Control: Assessment 1a (Learning Portfolio) – Spring 2017
Learning Portfolio Activity (10 marks): Apply innovative problem solving processes to address business issues related to Management Control Systems (MCS)
This set of activities is based on the case study: University of Southern California (US): Responsibility centre management system (p. 786 textbook). This is the same case as for activity 5 and 6. There are three learning objectives:
Learn to find and use innovative problem solving processes
Apply innovative problem solving processes to address business issues (program learning objectives 2.2)
Learn something about how to come up with innovative management planning and control solutions
Task 1 hints:
We define an innovative problem solving process as the use of any process to support innovative problem solving which is new to you, and it is effective. The process should be designed to enable you to think differently. An example would be the use of the business model template and set of questions we use in Seminar 1, which can be used to better understand and communicate key characteristics of organisations. Other examples include the double diamond approach, design thinking approaches, reframing, prototyping, ‘what if’ thought experiments, visual thinking, among others. You may focus on one, or combine more than one, innovative problem solving process
You may want to revise the Mandatory open source learning module on creativity which you did during the preparation / orientation weeks before attempting this task.
Quite a few students in the past chose very generic frameworks describing the common problem solving processes (e.g. the Osborn models from the internet are among the most popular choices), without actually explaining “how” new ideas or innovative solutions are generated and what’s special about the way you do it (that is, did we learn anything new about how we think from undertaking Task 1).
The innovative problem solving process has to be used by you (i.e. the students) to derive your solution for task 2.
Task 1 innovative problem solving processes selection (300 words and one visualisation maximum; also a photo of you applying the innovative problem solving process to task 2)
Search for some different innovative problem solving processes, and select one which you think would be useful in completing task 2. Apply it to task 2, and if you do not find the process useful in completing task 2, try a different process.
In less than 300 words, explain what the process is and how you found it, why you selected it, and how it was (or was not) useful in completing task 2.
HINT: you may want to revise the Mandatory open source learning module on creativity which you did during the preparation / orientation weeks before attempting this task.
Task 2 Apply innovative problem solving processes in the context of control problems and Management Control Systems (300 words text maximum and unlimited visualisations)
A key challenge for USC is how to get academics to (i) do be more innovative (ii) do multidisciplinary research (iii) get more external grant income to support research. Apply the innovative problem solving processes from task 1 to generate a suggested management control system ‘solution’ as to how USC could address at least one of these challenges.
In less than 300 words and at least one visualisation, briefly describe the ‘control problem’, your innovative ‘solution’, and the reasons why you think the solution would work. Provide a logical justification for your solution, such as reference to cases or other evidence to support your logical argument.
NOTE: A visualisation includes any visual medium including picture, diagram, causal map, graph etc. Marks will be awarded for ‘solutions’ which demonstrate a solid understanding of the subject.
You must provide a logical justification for your solution.
Task 2 hints:
Absence of actual problem-solving: some reports in the past did not propose solutions; or there is very little indication that the approach described in task 1 has been used to facilitate real problem-solving by yourselves (students), instead, the discussion moves straight to some obvious suggestions that most of us are familiar with (therefore making task 1 redundant); or in some cases the processes themselves are posed as solutions and the students “imagine” that they should have been be adopted for task 2 (e.g. more “brainstorming” or simply meetings in general, are said to be solutions to a variety of problems).
Lack of in-depth problem solving: some popular recommendations are proposed as easy and obvious fixes to a range of complex problems; but in many instances the organizational context is oversimplified, with significant control costs/consequences ignored.

Annual interest rate on loan

  Annual interest rate on loan

QUESTION `1. [6 + 8 = 14 Marks.]

This is a two period certainty model problem.
Assume that William Brown has a sole income from Bobcat Ltd in which he owns 12% of the ordinary share capital.

In its financial year 2016-17 just ended, Bobcat Ltd reported net profits after tax of $600,000, and announced its net profits after tax expectation for the next financial year, 2017-18, to be 25% higher than this year’s figure. The company operates with a dividend payout ratio of 70%, which it plans to continue, and will pay the annual dividend for 2016-17 in mid-August, 2017, and the dividend for 2017-18 in mid-August, 2018.

In mid-August, 2018, Jack wishes to spend $100,000, which will include the cost of a new car.. How much can he consume in mid-August, 2017 if the capital market offers an interest rate of 9% per year

QUESTION 1 continued.

This question relates to the valuation of shares.
Big Ideas Ltd has just paid a dividend of $1.20 a share. Investors require a 12% per annum return on investments such as Big Ideas. What would a share in Big Ideas Ltd be expected to sell for today (August, 2017) if the dividend is expected to increase by 20% in August, 2018, 15% in August, 2019, 10% in August, 2020 and thereafter by 5 per cent a year forever, from August, 2021 onwards

QUESTION 2. [(4 + 6) + (4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4) = 30 Marks]

This question relates to the time value of money and deferred perpetuities.
Colin Greenway attended Bunyip High School in the 1970s. After leaving school, Colin became a successful entrepreneur and is now very wealthy. He wishes to establish a perpetual scholarship fund which will provide $10,000 a year, payable to five high performing students at Bunyip High School each year in Year 12, that is, $50,000 a year, starting in early 2020. It is now early 2017. The High School Principal believes that the required funds can be invested at 5 per cent a year in perpetuity.

What is the present value in early 2017 of the whole income stream, and thus the amount which Colin must contribute to establish the fund
The High School Principal, while most appreciative of Colin’s great generosity, mentions that fees at Bunyip High are rising on average by 3 per cent every year because of inflation, and that in several years, $10,000 will not be enough to keep a student in year 12 for a whole year. Colin decides that he will increase the amount to establish the fund so as to provide for increases in the scholarship amount by 3 per cent a year in perpetuity, the first increase occurring in early 2021. How much extra (above the amount calculated in i) above, will Colin need to contribute in early 2017 so as to provide for these inflation increases forever
[HINT: Consider a formula similar to the dividend growth model.]

QUESTION 2 continued.

This question relates to loan repayments and loan terms.
Ron and Robin Reid wish to borrow $540,000 to buy a home. The loan from Biggles Bank requires equal monthly repayments over 20 years, and carries.an interest rate of 7.8% per annum, compounded monthly. The first repayment is due at the end of the first month.

You are required to calculate:

the effective annual interest rate on the above loan.
the amount of the monthly repayment (consisting of interest and principal repayment components) if the same amount is to be repaid every month over the 20 year period of the loan.
the amount of $X, if – instead of the above – Biggles Bank agrees that Ron and Robin will repay the loan by paying the bank $3,300 per month for the first 12 months, then $3,750 a month for the next 12 months, and after that $X per month for the balance of the 20 year term.
QUESTION 2 b) continued.

how long (in years and months) it would take to repay the loan if, alternatively, Ron and Robin decide to repay $2,500 per month, with the first repayment again being at the end of the first month after taking the loan, and continuing until the loan was repaid.
under option iv) above, the amount of the final repayment. [NOTE: Towards the end of the loan repayment period, after the final full monthly instalment of $2,500 is paid, a lesser amount is likely to be outstanding. That amount, plus interest to the end of the following month, is the final loan repayment amount.]
QUESTION 3. [(2 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 3) + (6 + 2 + 4) = 30 marks]

This question relates to alternative investment choice techniques
Stanley Livingstone is considering the following cash flows for two mutually exclusive projects.

Year Cash Flows, Investment X ($) Cash Flows, Investment Y ($)

0 -40,000 -40,000

1 12,000 18,000

2 18,000 18,000

3 27,000 18,000

You are required to answer the following questions:

If the cash flows after year 0 occur evenly over each year, what is the payback period for each project, and on this basis, which project would you prefer
IN THE REMAINING PARTS, ASSUME THAT ALL CASH FLOWS OCCUR AT THE END OF EACH YEAR.

Would the payback periods then be any different to your answer in i) If so, what would the payback periods be
QUESTION 3 a) continued.

Sketch freehand the net present value (NPV) profiles for each investment on the same graph. Label both axes and the NPV profile for each investment
Calculate the internal rate of return (IRR) for each project and indicate them on the graph. [NOTE: It is satisfactory if the approximate IRR is calculated for Investment X by trial and error, and stated as a percentage correct to the nearer whole number. The IRR for Investment Y should be calculated as a percentage exactly, correct to 1 decimal place.]
QUESTION 3 a) continued.

Calculate the exact crossover point and indicate it on the above graph.
State which of the investments you would prefer, depending on the required rate of return (i.e., depending on the discount rate).
This question relates to the valuation of bonds.
Bradley White, a retired school teacher, has two 6 per cent per annum $100,000 Australian Government bonds that mature on 15 August, 2020 and 15 August, 2023 respectively. At the date of the last half-yearly interest payment, viz., 15 February, 2017, both bonds were selling at par.

Since then, interest yields on bonds have risen by 2% per annum, compounded half-yearly. Bradley now intends to sell the bonds and put a deposit on a suburban townhouse.

Calculate the price he will receive from each bond if he sells on 15 August, 2017 at the new yield, immediately after receiving the interest payments due that day.
QUESTION 3 b) continued.

Explain the relative price movements in the two bonds, as evidenced in your answer to i) above.
Suppose that Bradley defers buying the bonds for 84 days, that is until 7 November, 2017. How much will he pay for each bond on that day [NOTE: Between the bond interest due dates from mid-August to mid-February is 184 days, during which time interest accrues on a compound basis.]
QUESTION 4. [24 + 2 = 26 marks].

This question relates to capital budgeting.

Perth Projects Ltd is considering the purchase of new technology costing $600,000, which it will fully finance with a fixed interest loan of 10% per annum, with the principal repaid at the end of 4 years.

The new technology will permit the company to reduce its to reduce its labour costs by $200,000 a year for 4 years, and the technology may be depreciated for tax purposes by the straight-line method to zero over the 4 years. The company thinks that it can sell the technology at the end of 4 years for $30,000.

The technology will need to be stored in a building, currently being rented out for $40,000 a year under a lease agreement with 4 yearly rental payments to run, the next one being due at the end of one year. Under the lease agreement, Perth Projects Ltd can cancel the lease by paying the tenant (now) compensation equal to one year’s rental payment plus 10%, but this amount is not deductible for income tax purposes.

This is not the first time that the company has considered this purchase. Twelve months ago, the company engaged Marvel Consultants, at a fee of $30,000 paid in advance, to conduct a feasibility study on savings strategies and Marvel made the above recommendations. At the time, Perth P:rojects did not proceed with the recommended strategy, but is now reconsidering the proposal.

Perth Projects further estimates that it will have to spend $20,000 in 2 years’ time overhauling the technology. It will also require additions to current assets of $30,000 at the beginning of the project, which will be fully recoverable at the end of the fourth year.

Perth Projects Ltd’s cost of capital is 10%. The tax rate is 30%. Tax is paid in the year in which earnings are received.

REQUIRED:

Calculate the net present value (NPV), that is, the net benefit or net loss in present value terms of the proposed purchase costs and the resultant incremental cash flows.
[HINT: As shown in the text-book, it is recommended that for each year you calculate the tax effect first, then identify the cash flows, then calculate the overall net present value.]

QUESTION 4 a) continued.

Should the company purchase the technology State clearly why or why not.

Case study on Dissertation Writing

UK Dissertation Writing

As an indicator of a scholar’s true abilities in research, a dissertation is the most important discourse that one will ever do in university. It is usually a piece of work that is extended with a more in-depth material examination than any other paper that a student would ever do. A unique thing about a dissertation is that a student has the freedom to choose his/her paper’s topic unlike most other kinds of papers whose topics are dictated by the instructors. Despite having the freedom to choose one’s topic, a scholar has to seek the topic’s approval from the instructor. While many face challenges in coming up with appropriate topics, there are those who have found an easier way by seeking help from our UK Dissertation Writing Service. Doing this not only ensures that their topics have a higher approval probability, but also helps them avoid the hassles of being sent away to look for appropriate topics repeatedly.

Unlike other papers, writing a dissertation dictates that a student has to add to the knowledge that already exists or come up with totally new findings in the field of study. The select topic therefore has to be one that is not just obvious, but one that is worthy investing time and resources; a topic that will add value to the study area. Before commencing the writing process, it is important for one to do some research on how to write a dissertation. UK universities have been known to be among the strictest universities in the world. The lecturers don’t expect a graduate scholar to submit a substandard dissertation paper. This results to a great number of them spending many years in school than the required time due to lack of comprehension of what the instructors require from them. It is therefore not surprising to see find post graduate students go online to seek help with writing a dissertation or even trying to find out how to format a dissertation.

If you are a student and ever find yourself stuck in writing, editing or even removing plagiarism in a dissertation paper, consult us for help. Our professional UK dissertation writing assistance ensures that all the instructions that come along with your order are followed and a quality document is submitted. By doing so, your professor will have no option but to reward you favourably as your paper will have met his/her expectations.

Patient Identity Management

Patient Identity Management
Having accurate patient identification mechanisms is the foundation for successfully linking patient records across healthcare ecosystems. It is also essential to having a patient-centered health system and patient-centered health processes (Hannah & Kathryn, 2015). Hospitals have invested a lot of money in systems that aid them to identify patients and trace their records despite the different ID’s that patients could be using in the different hospital sections (Matyas &Vashek, 2009). If a patient came and registered with the Radiotherapy department as Bob, it would be hard for the physicians to trace such a patient if he often uses Robert instead of Bob. This is very dangerous because it would lead to physicians making wrong inferences and prescribing wrong medications that would eventually cause more harm than good to the patient. Hospitals have stepped up their efforts to avoid such issues becoming rampant through the acquisition of clinical data repositories such as physicians EHRs, hospital EMRs, and state vaccination records (Hannah & Kathryn, 2015)
The value of health information exchange (HIE) is indeed something that physicians never fail to acknowledge because they know how essential it is (Hannah & Kathryn, 2015). Physicians have been able to gain access to patient healthcare data, which has made it possible for them to make informed decisions instead of making wild guesses and inferences. Patients have different records. This means that they have different allergies, different prescriptions, chronic conditions and also procedures (Hannah & Kathryn, 2015). For example; patients with peanut allergy are always advised never to have peanut due to the severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis (Bischoff & Alexander, 2006). This information is very important to physicians. Physicians will not only know how to proceed if such an incident happens, but will also be able to save the life of a patient. HIE is indeed important, and a patient’s identity together with their medical history should be easily accessible to the physicians.
At times the hospital staff might take the issue of Language Access Policy (LAP) for granted but it is also valuable and plays a key role in ensuring that patients are well taken care of (Bischoff & Alexander, 2006). Hospitals have a significant number of patients who are limited in language proficiency (Bischoff & Alexander, 2006). This means that most of them are not able to clearly explain their conditionsto the physicians. This presents a big challenge to the hospital staff because getting a patient’s history and their current medical condition is imperative to appropriate medication being offered. Using the same example of a peanut allergy patient, if the physician is not able to know exactly what the patient is suffering from, then it would be hard for him to administer the epinephrine that is needed immediately by such patients. Language is indeed very important and in most cases, a patient’s life is dependent on the physician’s understanding of the patient’s description.
Language is not only important in understanding the patient’s condition and history but also in the provision of appropriate healthcare. Having interpreters in medical facilities is essential and imperative in ensuring that all patients have access to appropriate healthcare services. Hospitals should conduct background checks on the interpreters before they decide to give them the job to ensure that genuine interpreters with a complete understanding of a certain language are acquired. Interpreters should also be taken through several tests to ensure that they provide accurate and comprehensive interpreting. For example, physicians could notice that patients die, or their condition worsens after they use the interpreter’s information. In a situation such as this, it could mean that the interpreter is either lying to them, or he does not understand the patient’s language, and in both cases, the patient’s life is endangered.
Patient’s privacy and security of health information have become an important concern nowadays. Healthcare providers are required by law to comply and adhere to the laws that govern or protect patient’s privacy (Mayer et al, 2004). Patient’s privacy is not only protected by the land laws, but it is also bolstered by the medical ethics guiding principles (Mayer et al, 2004). Physicians need to be warned of the consequences that their actions could have on their patients. For example, AIDS-related discrimination and stigma persist, and people with the HIV/AIDS virus have been victims of discrimination in workplaces, health care and also housing (Mayer et al, 2004). It not only affects their decision to obtain health care but also goes a long way in discouraging them to get tested and even seek treatment (Mayer et al, 2004). Complying with the privacy rules is indeed very important and all health care facilities need to adhere to them.
In certain situations, there are instances where physicians could be forced to reveal patients health information. In an instance where withholding the patient’s health condition could put the public at risk, then it will be inevitable for health care professionals to reveal the information for the greater good (McGowan, 2012). As a matter of fact, the law requires that health care professionals make such information known to the public (McGowan, 2012). For example, just recently in West Africa, there were Ebola cases and many people died as a result. If a health care professional had information about the disease outbreak and decided to withhold it then as per the land laws, he could be tried and eventually jailed (McGowan, 2012). Health providers are aware of this and even though many always adhere to the patient privacy laws, they all know that exceptions exist. Patient privacy is indeed very important and some health care professionals have been sued for breach of contract or professional negligence but as said before, there are instances where physicians are allowed by law to reveal private patient information (McGowan, C., 2012).

Case study on Analytical Choices

 Case study on Analytical Choices

– This essay should be a 650-900 word essay
– The essay should be in MLA essay format
– Analytical essays should be focused on making a debatable claim about the work in question; creative essays should be focused on presenting a work or kind of work from a different angle. Informational essays or essays consisting of summary are not appropriate for either type of essay. Both types of essay should be supported with discussion of specific passages from the text(s) on which the essay is focused.

Choose 1 of the following topics from Analytical categories. For the analytical choices, be sure to write a thesis-driven essay in response to the topic.

Analytical Choices

– Who Painted the Lion Chaucer’s Wife of Bath, as she describes her own life and marriages in her prologue, points out the problem that stories about women seem to have been mostly written by men: `Who painted first the lion, tell me who` (Chaucer 816). Many of these, she opines, are negative, and the implication is that it would be different if women were writing the stories themselves. Choose 1 female character from the tales (not the prologues) in The Canterbury Tales or from any of our other earlier readings, and make a claim about whether this female figure is positive, negative, or neutral. Use only passages from the story itself (and, if you’re writing on a part of The Canterbury Tales, the tale-teller’s prologue) to support your position.

– The Return of Greek Mythology: The setting of The Knight’s Tale is ancient Greece, and it may be tempting to compare this story to The Iliad. Think back to our Week 2 reading and compare the heroic ideals depicted in The Iliad with the heroic ideals depicted in The Knight’s Tale. Can we read The Knight’s Tale as being a direct reflection of the heroic ideals we find in The Iliad Why or why not

– Ruling Well in the Real World: Choose one leader from US history and evaluate him or her in terms of EITHER Machiavelli’s model of an ideal prince OR Confucius’ model of a good leader. Support your thesis with quotations of and references to specific passages from the chosen author’s work and with specific details from these politicians’ careers. Some minor historical research is allowed for this topic.

– Good Rulers in Fictional Works: Choose one leader or character from our earlier assigned readings (from Weeks 2-5) and evaluate him or her in terms of EITHER Machiavelli’s model of an ideal prince OR Confucius’ model of a good leader. Support your thesis with quotations of and references to specific passages from the two chosen works.

– Judging Other Tales: Choose one important character any one of the works assigned in Weeks 2-5 (choose a single tale if using a work from Weeks 4 or 5), and evaluate him or her using the moral structures set up by Dante in our reading from The Inferno. Leaving aside the character’s religion (which would automatically relegate some characters at least to Limbo), would this character be hell-worthy in Dante’s view Why or why not

participation of students in various learning process.

Part I
Student Involvement
Student involvement refers to the active participation of students in various learning process. This is in contrast to a situation where students remain passive as knowledge and theoretical content in imparted on them. Research has shown that student involvement is by far the best way of gaining knowledge and skills. It has great benefits for the student in regard to future career, educational success and personal development. More importantly, student involvement helps in furnishing social skills, communication and the process of building strong networks in life with one another.
There are different kinds of activities that students can do to be actively involved in their academics. The most common of these is active participation in class during lessons and lectures. Such participation is in the form of asking questions and clarifications from the instructor, as well as giving practical answers to questions and situations posed. This way, a student gets a chance to expand knowledge as well as develop critical thinking which is an important factor to consider in life.
Students can be actively involved in extra-curricular activities such as clubs and unions. There are many associations in schools that are created for various functions. Such associations are normally free for anyone to join. In groups, students learn about team work, organizing real life events and even get a chance to exercise their leadership skills. In fact, it is through these activities, including camping, where leadership can be further developed. Communication skills as well as learning how to handle others are more benefits of such engagements. Above all, it breaks the monotony that is normally experienced in classroom and academic contents, allowing students to refresh.
Student involvement can also be through attending internships, attachments and volunteering. These are practical steps in life which give students firsthand information which is more valuable than the classroom theories. I have been actively involved in the above three activities at American River College, which I found to be very helpful as a whole.
Part II
Most Important Topics
Every section of this course is generally important in life. However, there are three areas which I found to be very informative and practical in the real life. This is especially so when it comes to my specialization, which is electrical engineering. These include time management, maintaining high personal motivation and keeping my educational goals.
Time Management
In most situations, time management always emerges as a top priority for everyone. Whether in school, home or at work, time is always a precious commodity and resource that must be fully and constructively utilized. Time management, on a personal basis, helped me a lot in school, and I can foresee my skills in the same being a booster in my career. Learning how to manage time is a great experience that leaves everyone feeling renewed and motivated.
From a general point of view, every individual has many things and projects to accomplish within a given period of time, like a day. The success, accuracy and effectiveness of implementing them depend on several factors, and mainly the manner in which the available time is managed. In most cases, if I managed my time well, I ended up finishing all the tasks that I had to accomplish, and even have extra time for myself.
Time management is always helpful when it comes to avoiding procrastination. It is always fulfilling and self-motivating to have the day’s tasks accomplished in time. The opposite is always demoralizing, especially when work piles up and one has to strain in the end to make ends meet.
When it comes to critical and analytical thinking, time management plays an important role. Allocating time for every activity would allow one the much needed space to achieve effectiveness and efficiency. In the process, one gets to focus on whatever he or she is doing, and in the end, and analyze each element without the pressure of awaiting tasks.
Motivation
Motivation is one of the most significant psychological factors that affect human growth and development. As a student, motivation is always important in ensuring that one remains focused on the important elements in life or academics. Personal motivation is always a determinant of individual growth and perception, which generally affects progress. When an individual is motivated, he or she would have the power to work hard and deliver good results at the end. This is mainly because they understand the reason as to why hard work is not an option, and it is important to attain the set target.
In the case of a student, motivation is a very important element which highly affects academic progress. A student who is motivated has his or her eyes set on a prize, and they work towards it. Motivated students are always eager to learn. A student who is not motivated has no particular focus, and therefore operates on a procedural basis.
The process of goal setting is also affected by the motivation found among different students. Goals vary from being distinct, clear and timely to being general and having unreasonable spans of time. Motivated students are analytical and critical in their thinking.
Educational Goals
This course has taught me the importance of having personal goals in education. Goals are important in defining the direction in which we are heading, as well as setting the basis of our work. When I have goals, I am able to focus better and have a check factor always. The obligation to work and remain within the goals is always there. It is crucial to set goals that are reasonable, achievable and within set periods of time. Goals are useful in motivating an individual, as well as enhancing critical ability. In the strive to attain set goals, one goes through analyzing situations as well as thinking critically to overcome the hurdles that exist on the way.
Part III
No. 1
Colonization primarily refers to the establishment of a civil rule in a state by another country. In this case, the ruling state is normally much more powerful and advanced. In the case of decolonization, the colonized state resists foreign influence and establishes its own local rule. The two descriptions encompass the United States history, where colonization and slavery are frequently mentioned. At the time where America was declared an independent state, slaves and native people maintained citizenship.
There are many stereotypes that still exist about the black people in the United States. For a long time, they had all been made to believe that they are slaves and will always be. They believed that the natives are much smarter than them, and possess a great deal of cultural capital. This has never really been the case, but stereotypes always seem to stick. Many notions have also developed overtime, with most being a discriminatory path among the many tribes and ethnic groups that have lived in America in the past, before reforms of equality were effected.
No. 2
Racial microagressions are verbal statements, environmental indignities or behaviors that occur on a daily basis and are common. They are usually brief and sound hostile or insults in the ears of people with color, whether they are portrayed deliberately or unintentionally. Internalized racism is found in the situation where a given group of people have ethic attitudes towards members of their own groups, or even themselves. It is a belief based on stereotypes that portray them in a particular manner.
There are many ways in which racial microagressions are hurtful to people of color. Depending on how motivated a student is, it can be a constant source of stress and psychological discomfort. For instance, I recently overheard a high school asking another ‘what’ she is. I later understood that it was because of her mixed race. One would wonder how being a half cast makes her a ‘what’ rather than a normal human being. From my high school experience, a student once asked a classmate why he did not behave like a normal black people. Another wanted to know the language a colleague spoke in Japan, after suggesting ‘Asian’.
Internalized racism holds one back from achieving their goals in life, or prevents socialization with others. Due to this trait, one may feel that they are superior or inferior to others, which is a disadvantage, for instance, certain cosmetic practices are associated with certain races.
No. 3
Cultural capital refers to the non-financial assets within the society that promote togetherness, mobility and are generally used for the good of the community. Cultural capital can include elements such as education, physical appearance, the style of speech, mode of dressing and intellectual levels. They are distinct characteristics that define the community at large. On an individual basis, cultural capital refers to those factors that place an individual in a higher status than the rest in the community.
Community cultural wealth, according to Yosso, refers to the range of abilities, skills and knowledge that is possessed by communities of color. This is mainly in terms of resisting operations and surviving at large.
There are three major types of cultural capital. Embodied cultural capital is the first type. This kind of capital can either be acquired in a conscious state or generally handed down the community line. The elements here are acquired overtime, meaning that an individual has to practice the particular culture in order to acquire it. Embodied cultural capital; is closely related to community cultural wealth, since the former leads to the latter.
Objective cultural capital represents the tangible part of the environment. It refers to the physical items that symbolize the culture of the community. They are unique and can be easily associated with that community.
Institutionalized cultural capital mainly refers to the qualifications in education that give an individual cultural capital.
The urge to attain higher cultural capita, in terms of education, and higher community cultural wealth, in terms of skills and knowledge, influence students greatly and act as achievable goals. They provide the basis or purpose for working hard.

Synthesis and Evaluation

Reflective Journal: Synthesis and Evaluation
To my knowledge, I have always thought that evaluation is only used to giving students grades after the end of an academic year. But to the contrary evaluation serve several essential functions in the education sector. Throughout the text, the general function of evaluation comes out clearly and fits my reasoning in that; it is a critical factor in assessing whether the course objectives have been achieved both by the teacher and students.
As a teacher, this is critical as it challenges me to ensure that I formulate plans and set objectives that when critically evaluated will register positive outcome. Being a teacher, it is my role to ensure my students meet their set objectives by adhering to the course curriculum. Therefore, evaluation is the best technique to use when dealing with students as it serves to compare different learning programs, diagnose students, measure whether objectives have been achieved, and revise the learning curriculum and in anticipation of educational needs (Eisner evaluation, pg1). To ensure that curriculum meet student expectations, the need for improvement and modification arises. Therefore evaluation ensures programs are constantly revised and evaluated so as to accommodate new learning skills that might improve students’ welfare.
In my learning environment, all these techniques that fit under evaluation can be incorporated so as to influence the performance of students. For instance, I would apply the technique of diagnoses while teaching and then later determine if my diagnosis during class work worked when I gauge students at the end of the course work. It is for sure that various topic and distinction arises when addressing the topic of evaluation. One such issue that should be addressed is whether the whole issue of evaluation work only to benefit the student or whether it benefits both the student and the teacher.

Case study on Ethical issues

Becky Knauer recently resigned from her position as controller for Shamalay Automotive, a small, struggling foreign car dealer in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Becky has just started a new job as controller for Mueller Imports, a much larger dealer for the same car manufacturer. Demand for this particular make of car is exploding, and the manufacturer cannot produce enough to satisfy demand. The manufacturers regional sales managers are each given a certain number of cars. Each sales manager then decides how to divide the cars among the independently owned dealerships in the region. Because of high demand for these cars, dealerships all want to receive as many cars as they can from the regional sales manager. Beckys former employer, Shamalay Automotive, receives only about 25 cars each month. Consequently, Shamalay is not very profitable. Becky is surprised to learn that her new employer, Mueller Imports, receives more than 200 cars each month. Becky soon gets another surprise. Every couple of months, a local jeweler bills the dealer $5,000 for miscellaneous services. Franz Mueller, the owner of the dealership, personally approves payment of these invoices, noting that each invoice is a selling expense. From casual conversations with a salesperson, Becky learns that Mueller frequently gives Rolex watches to the manufacturers regional sales manager and other sales executives. Before talking to anyone about this, Becky decides to work through her ethical dilemma. Put yourself in Beckys place. Requirements: Answer the following: 1. What is the ethical issue 2. What are your options 3. What are the possible consequences 4. What should you do Total writing only needs to be at least 250 words. One academic source is required and must be cited in APA 6th edition. Reference page is needed.

Ethical issues
Name:
Institution:

1. Bribing
Mueller’s is in the habit of giving Rolex watches to the manufacturer’s regional sales manager and other sales representatives. TheRolexwatches are given free of charge and without the approval and authorization of other senior officials of the company. The act passes as a bribe to the regional sales manager in return of more allocation of cars. Mueller also personally expenses the billing of jewelry in the company books which are non-allowable expenses against the company revenues. Both bribery and creative accounting are unethical acts under the accounting and managerial principles and a criminal offence under the statute (Beauchamp, Bowie & Arnold, 2004).
2. Option
As a professional, the only option under such a situation is to resign from the post of controller of Mueller Imports.
3. Consequences of bribing
Bribing is subject to disciplinary actions from both the government and professional regulatory bodies.
Under the statute, Mueller, the manufactures regional sales manager and the sales representatives should be charged to the courts of law for corruption and penalties, fines or imprisonment awarded to them.
The overseeing professional body of managers should seek to discipline the managers involved by withdrawing their practicing certificates and delisting them from being members of the body.
Bribery has a negative economic and social effect on people and business (Beauchamp, Bowie & Arnold, 2004). It lowerseconomic growth, discourages investment, support for economic aid and puts a heavy economic burden on the less piviledged.in the context, Shamalay Automobiles is a small struggling car dealer and has been marginalized in terms of number of cars awarded to it as it cannot bribe to the level of Mueller imports. The practice has resulted into relatively low profits for Shamalay Automobiles and staff turnover.
4. What to do
As a professional and conservative of ethical morality I have a number of alternatives in order to curb the issue.
Create awareness of the ethical morality and issues in transactions to both Mueller and the entire organization (Beauchamp, Bowie & Arnold, 2004).
In the event that Mueller does not rectify his actions, I will have to report the issue to the relevant authority.
