Critical Analysis Essay

Write a 2–4-page critical essay addressing the following claim about corruption:

“Corruption is a Western concept and is not applicable to traditional societies, where corruption does not have such a negative meaning. Many traditional societies with a ‘gift culture’ have a different understanding of civil responsibilities and etiquette. The social structure and political traditions of many countries are based on the beneficial exchange of rewards for services rendered, and cannot survive in its absence” (International Debate Education, 2011, p. 63 ).

Answer the following questions in your essay:

Do you agree with any part of this claim? If so, which parts? If not, why not?
What do the readings say on the topic of corruption as cultural tradition? What counter arguments do they make to the above assertion? Consider how gift culture and/or corruption is reflected in art, music, or film.
How could gift-giving traditions be used by unscrupulous officials as a way to take advantage of people in the name of tradition?

criminal justice

Use the concepts in your learning from the class to describe current theories related to ethics within the field of criminal justice. Your paper should address the following:

Explain in detail the “slippery slope” and its relationship to gratuities, using examples.
Explain each of the following theories regarding public corruption
Society-at-Large Hypothesis
Structural or Affiliation Hypothesis
Rotten Apple Hypothesis

Southern gothic story

M.O. Walsh argues that what really makes a Southern gothic story, and the reason so many people love the genre, is that the characters are, almost without exception, underdogs. He explains, “Although it has been said that every person is the hero of their own life story, it is more accurate to say that every person is the underdog of their own life story. And though the Civil War is long gone, the American south still suffers from its past in almost every conceivable way, whether it be poverty rates or failing education systems.”

How does Walsh’s argument apply to the main characters in A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche, Stella, and Stanley? You may write about one, two, or all three of these characters. Your post should be 500-750 words in length, the equivalent of 2-3 double-spaced pages.

Structure:

Your primary post should include an introduction (Links to an external site.) that introduces the topic and ends with a clearly worded, 1-2 sentence thesis statement. (Links to an external site.). Each supporting paragraph (there should be at least 3) should begin with a strong topic sentence (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and should incorporate evidence, including direct quotations from the short stories as needed to support your argument. Direct quotations should be incorporated using the quotation sandwich method (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and proper MLA in-text citations (Links to an external site.). The post should also contain a strong conclusion (Links to an external site.)

WIND ENERGY UK

WIND ENERGY UK

has a total capacity of 1200 MW generated by 240
turbines (assume a standard configuration) situated across 12 locations offshore
along the south east coast of England. The average availability of the turbines
across the fleet is less than 50%. There have been several catastrophic blade
failures leading to serious concerns over public and employee safety. Your client is
specifically concerned about an increasing number of main gearbox failures. The
majority of the issues appear to be maintenance related rather than inherent design
or build problems. Field failure data is very limited. Your RCM study might follow, but
is not limited to, the proposed method outlined in items (1)-(3). Item (4) is mandatory.

(1) Conduct a suitable failure modes and effects analysis that identifies the critical
wind turbine failure modes.
(2) Examine each of the critical failure modes to determine the optimum
maintenance policy.
(3) Your maintenance strategy might take into account cost, safety, environmental
and operational consequences.
(4) You should include in your discussion how the results from your RCM study
might compare to the results from a traditional RAMS study on the same asset
operating under the same conditions.
Note:- You may estimate the input data required for items (1), (2) and (3). The
assignment is designed to test your understanding of the application the method
NOT your knowledge of wind turbine technology. No need to cover in detail the
maintenance delivery (CBM technology etc) – this is covered in detail in the
Condition Based Module.

Sex and the aging client

Sex and the aging client; an oxymoron? What common issues and concerns regarding sexuality are expressed by the geriatric set? Discuss patient situations that you have encountered regarding patient/client sexuality. As a result of sexual activity, what is the prevalence of STD’s in the elderly? What is the sequela of untreated STD’s in the geriatric client? What education needs to occur for this population related to sexual activity?

Marginalized Minorities in the Media

Option #1: Marginalized Minorities in the Media

Choose ONE marginalized media minority from the following list:

Women
African Americans/Blacks
Asians
Latinos
Muslims/Arabs/Arab- or Muslim-Americans
Native Americans
The elderly
LGBTQ persons
Obese people
Disabled people
Analyze your chosen marginalized media minority as portrayed in any of the following entertainment media (must be released between 2010 and 2017):

Television/online streaming programming
Film
Video games
State and develop a clear thesis about the media minority portrayals you see and address these questions:

How is the marginalized group portrayed?
Why do you think your group is portrayed in this way?
What social pressures and production forces shape those portrayals?
Use original research and specific media examples to support your argument, and explain historic and current trends in these minority portrayals.

Incorporate a media theory to explain what effect you think this portrayal has on audiences, and how members of the group are treated in society as a result. Use the CSU-Global Library to conduct scholarly research; find specific media examples to support your argument; and explain historic and current trends in these minority portrayals.

Your well-written paper should meet the following requirements:

Feel free to use the readings from any module, but also incorporate at least four to six scholarly sources not used in this course.
Make your paper 8-10 pages in length, not including the cover and reference pages.
Format your document according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
NOTE: An academic research paper is a formal project based on research and, therefore, it is not appropriate to use first person voice or pronouns, which can lead to opinion insertion. Instead, use third person voice or pronouns for academic writing. Write clearly and logically, as you will be graded on content, analysis, and your adherence to the tenets of good academic writing, which should be succinct where possible, while also exploring the topics appropriately.

Leadership in Organisations

The first part of your assignment may be written in the first person (using ‘I’) since it is a personal reflection. You are advised to focus on one or two specific experiences of leadership – either where you were in a leadership role, or where you could observe ‘leadership’ in action even if you were not a ‘leader’. These experiences might be drawn from your work experience or from other experience (voluntary work, student experience in working in a group, parenting, sport or other leisure activities). The experience should be one where you were an active participant. You should describe the situation and evaluate the leadership process using relevant theory and concepts drawn from the academic literature on leadership. In suggesting areas for your own development you should focus on skills or attributes that you think you need to develop, based on analysis of the experience. You should situate this reflection within the concepts and theory discussed in class and/or through your reading for the module.
The second part of the assignment requires you to critically evaluate the leadership of Marissa Mayer, who is the outgoing CEO of Yahoo, and a former GOOGLE VP. She was praised at Google for developing products including Gmail, Google Maps, and Google News. At Yahoo her leadership has been criticised for contributing to declining profits after her appointment in 2012. In July 2016 it was announced that Yahoo would be selling its core business to Verizon. You should consider the effectiveness of Marissa Mayer’s leadership qualities from the perspectives of trait and behavioural theories, situational and contingency theory, transformational and transactional leadership, distributed leadership, ethical leadership and critical leadership perspectives. You should also consider the extent to which there has been ‘gender bias’ reporting of Marissa Mayer’s leadership.
You should read widely on theories of leadership, styles of leadership and critical leadership, and apply these critically to Marissa Mayer. You should also incorporate a regard for the ethics of leadership. In critically evaluating Mayer you may want to compare her style with other leaders, in the Tech industry. Have a look at the following two links which will introduce you to competing perspectives on Mayer’s leadership:
Marissa Mayer’s – contrasting views on her leadership
Marissa Mayer – A case study of poor leadership

economics

Step 1
Find a news article or story what was published since the start of the term (May 2018 – present). It can really be about anything since economics can offer insight into any event, but it’s a little easier if you start with a story that relates to business, money, finances, or the economy in general. Here are some places to try.
American Public Media’s Marketplace
Nightly business report
Michigan Radio
CNN money
Detroit Free Press

But really, any news site is fine. And the story doesn’t have to be a written article. It can also be a video or audio clip.

Step 2
After reading/viewing the story try to identify the economic concept(s) that best relate to the story. It should be something that helps either give a deeper explanation as to what’s going on, or even offers a contrasting explanation to what the author is saying.

Step 3
Write your one page paper using economic concepts to offer additional insights to the article. Warning: Don’t just recap what the story said, this is not a book report. You are to analyze the story and offer additional points using your newly gain knowledge of economics. A good way to do this is either elaborate on what the author is saying or try to challenge it. But use economics! Start by thinking of the story in the economic framework; scarcity, tradeoffs, incentives, equilibrium… And try to identify relevant concepts from the book. Remember the ultimate purpose of these papers is to demonstrate your knowledge of economics/macroeconomics so I can award you extra points. To make your use of course content glaringly obvious, bold and underline and vocabulary, names, or terms from class. For example you could say “this is a good example of Adam Smith’s invisible hand theory and goes to show that with the right institutions the self interest can match the social interest.” There is not a required maximum or minimum name of terms to use, but if you look back at your paper and you only have 1 or two terms bold/underlined on the entire page, it probably won’t get too many points.

SOCIAL ISSUES IN SONGS

SOCIAL ISSUES IN SONGS:How Songs Mirror Our WorldMusic has a powerful social influence on society. It helps us remember the past, grapple with current issues and trends, and look to a brighter tomorrow. Popular music and lyrics are often focused on social and/or political issues related to the time they were created. For example, The Rolling Stones 1969 hit, Gimme Shelter, is a response to the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. Clearly, the repetition of the phrase, “Rape, murder! / It’s just a shot away / It’s just a shot away,” sheds light on the negative climate surrounding our involvement in the Vietnam War.The purpose of this assignment is to1)select a song, 2)analyze it, and 3)make a claim as to how the song accurately reflects social/political issues occurring at that period in time.Guiding questions:What is this song in response to? What political and/or social issue is it addressing?What is the artist’s response to this social issue? What is he/she trying to say aboutit? Use evidence from the song to show this.In what ways does the artist’s response to the social issue reflect society’s response as well?What was occurring in history at the time this song was written? In what ways could this song be a commentary on the events occurring at that time? How do I even begin this paper? There are a number of ways you can begin this paper, but here are a few options. Please note that although these are suggestions for how to begin your paper, you will want to include all of these components at some pointin the essay:Begin with a summary of the song (What is the song about? What do the lyrics mean?)Begin with a historical overview of the time period the song was written.Begin with an overview of the social/political issue the song is addressing.Begin with your connection to the song.REQUIREMENTSYou must provide historical contextof the song.You must provide an explanation of the social issues the song addresses.
