In this assignment, you are expected to reflect on your understanding of how mass communication and mass media intersects with the concepts we have been discussing in class. Focusing on Ch. 10 (Immigration discuss FIRST the relevance of these topics (you can pick or more than one chapter) in our current global scenario and THEN analyze the role of mass media (news coverage, social media, popular culture, etc) in highlighting the issues. BE CAREFUL NOT TO FOCUS ONLY on popular culture like film and television shows, but ALSO, to make reference to media coverage and social media when discussing the role of media.

This week, you will write a mini-systematic literature review. It is mini because you will only be reviewing two sources.

Remember, for a systematic review, focus your analysis on the treatments, causes, diagnosis, and prognosis presented in the literature.
Next, conduct your research of scholarly articles. Use the WCU Online Library databases. You will need to choose two sources to include in this mini-literature review.
For this review, be sure to:

Select two relevant and appropriate scholarly articles that address the topic you chose.
Present a thorough literature review of both articles by summarizing, synthesizing, and evaluating the materials.
Demonstrate understanding of the content presented in the articles.
Include a critical assessment of the sources. Do not simply include a summary of what you have read.
Incorporate citations into your body paragraphs; incorporate the essential and most relevant supporting evidence eloquently and appropriately.

Describe the role government should play in correcting for market failures. Ovarian Cyst Case Study

On the 22nd of December 2010 a 14 year old Jamie Wilson woke up like any other day. She told her parents that she was experiencing very mild pain in her right left abdomen. Since it was not severe Jamie took an Advil and continued on with her day.

Last minute Christmas shopping took her and her parents into the city. The pain she felt in her side was returning and slowly becoming more and more intense. Her parents brushed it off as just regular aches and pains that growing girls experience.

With a sudden convulsion of extreme pain and a scream of pure agony her parents decided to take her to the hospital for a second look. By the time they reached the children’s hospital emergency doors Jamie could not even stand. The nausea had over taken her completely. Jamie’s parents carried her in and began the process of admitting her. As the nurse began to evaluate her, the nausea became too much for her and she began to vomit in the ER. The nurses immediately brought her into a private room and started filling her with fluids through an IV. Jamie had blood taken and it was sent away for testing.

At this point the doctors were suspecting an appendicitis. As soon as Jamie had enough fluids in her system she was taken for an ultrasound. This process caused her even more pain as they pushed on her abdomen. Unfortunately the doctors did not see anything in the ultrasound and they proceeded to order a CT scan. As the ink entered Jamie’s body she felt extreme heat which worsened her nausea. The CT scan also came back empty but the doctors were still convinced it was her appendix.

Throughout the night her vitals were checked and she was prepped for an appendectomy. After a restless few hours of attempting to sleep Jamie was into the final stages of surgery prep. A specialist came to exam Jamie right before the surgery and changed the course of the entire day. The specialist ruled out appendicitis and concluded that it was most likely a ruptured cyst on her right ovary. This would explain the lack of evidence in the ultrasound and CT scan.

Unfortunately there is nothing doctors can do about ovarian cyst’s so Jamie was discharged from the hospital and told to relax while she recovered. Within a few days she regained her strength and appetite. It was determined that an ovarian cyst was indeed the cause behind the pain.

Evaluate the current compensation philosophy for your organization or an organization of your choosing (from a third-person perspective). Write a three-page biography of Lawrence (Larry) Roberts. Lawrence G. Roberts is an American scientist who received the Draper Prize in 2001 “for the development of the Internet”

1- Basic biography of where born, schools attended, places worked. Include up to now, or at the time of his death. This includes honors/awards, etc.

2- Main claim to digital fame. Although most digital pioneers were doing many amazing things, and you can certainly mention them, what is Larry’s one major claim to fame.

3- A lay person’s explanation of this claim to fame. As you will find, most of the pioneers were Ph.D.s who worked on topics that are complicated. Your job is to put what was accomplished in lay terms for the average person to understand.

4- How this achievement has contributed to digital media today.

You need a minimum of three sources.
This paper should be done in MLA style with a Works Cited (not Bibliography or References) and proper in-text citation.
You may NOT use Wikipedia.
This is not a cut-and-paste job. You should do careful research and write this in your own words referencing your sources.

Skloot begins the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, with the following quote from Elie Wiesel: “We must not see any person as an abstraction. Instead, we must see in every person a universe with its own secrets, with its own treasures, with its own sources of anguish, and with some measure of triumph.”

1) Analyze the film, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, in light of this quote.

2) Explain the various ways in which both the scientific community and the media are guilty of having viewed Henrietta and her family as abstractions. What are the consequences of this perspective?

3) How is Skloot’s different perspective evident in the way she conducted her research and wrote the book showcased in the film?

What are pheromones? They’re odorless chemicals that we give off from our bodies. It’s not the same thing as body odor! They’re odorless, remember? 🙂 They come out from every hair follicle on our bodies. And, it’s more concentrated in certain areas (e.g. armpits, groin, saliva, urine, and feces). We also emit more when we sweat (hair follicles, remember?).

So, what’s the purpose? We have a special area in our brain that is dedicated to detecting and processing pheromone information. And, we use that information for various things.

If you’re in the dating scene, would you consider wearing pheromones to increase your chances of attraction? Why or why not?
