Argument Essay

For this assignment, you will choose a debatable controversial topic or social problem about which you have some general knowledge or wish to research. Then you will need to isolate one specific issue related to this topic and present your position/proposal concerning it. For example, you may choose to write about immigration. This is a controversial topic, certainly one open to debate, but it could hardly be covered in a short essay. Therefore, you would need to choose a narrower issue on which to focus, like amnesty or the building of a border wall. Because these subtopics are narrower (more specific), you will be able to easily present your positions on them with a 3 page essay (minimum).

Banned topics include: abortion, the death penalty, lowering the drinking age, legalization of marijuana/etc., and any topic that suggests a conspiracy theory (if you have a question about whether your topic is acceptable, please email me as soon as possible). If you write on one of the above topics, you will receive a zero (0) for the assignment.

The essay should be at least five (5) paragraphs, though you may use more if necessary: Introduction; Body Paragraph for 1st reason; Body Paragraph for 2nd reason; Body Paragraph for 3rd reason; Conclusion. In the introduction, please provide information on the history of the issue and discuss why it is controversial and place the thesis as the final line of the introduction. The body paragraphs should follow the Analytical model we have been using throughout the previous assignments, and each body paragraph should have at least one (1) quote from an outside source to help support your points and positions. The conclusion should restate the thesis (not a copy/paste), briefly summarize the essay, and provide a call to future action for your readers (what do you want them to do now that they have an understanding of the issue?).

Essay Guidelines:

3 reasons for why you support or oppose the controversial issue or social problem
2-4 credible and relevant outside sources used to support your position and argument, with an MLA Works cited page for these sources (you should find these sources from library databases, library books, or from the provided list of credible websites; remember any non-preapproved source used without approval will not count towards the 2-4 requirement)
The use MLA documentation for in-text citations in the body paragraphs: signal phrases, direct quotes, and parenthetical notations for source integration (you may use only one paraphrase, one summary, and one block quote if needed—these are not required, however).
The use of only one appeal of pathos (a religious appeal is an argument of pathos)
3 complete pages (minimum)
Please upload this assignment in either a .docx or .pdf file. This assignment is worth thirty (30) points outlined in the rubric.

Persuasive Essay

Write a persuasive essay using one of the following prompts:

A closed mind is like a closed book: just a block of wood. (Chinese proverb)
A dream is just a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline. (Harvey Mackay)
Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t. (Erica Jong)

Decide if you agree or disagree with the prompt, and write a persuasive essay. To do this, you must anticipate any counterarguments and address them in your essay, and you must provide evidence to support your opinion.

The civil wars in Syria and Yemen

The civil wars in Syria and Yemen are bringing both countries to the brink of collapse. In your exam you will conduct your own research to try and identify the root causes of both wars. Your answer must include the following:

1. Briefly describe the current situation in both countries (20p for each civil war). You are required to use scholarly or other credible sources. You should address the following questions: when did the war begin? Who are the actors involved (domestic and international)? What are the goals of each side of the war? What has been done to try and resolve the conflict? There are plenty of news articles and reports that can assist you with these questions. Avoid using wikipedia.

2. Conduct your own research to identify some of the root causes of both conflicts. Your answer must point to at least three different factors (30 points for each factor, 90p in total). Please note that mentioning the factor is not enough but you must explain how each variable relates, or how does it help us understand the civil war in either Syria, Yemen, or both. To help you determine the causes, you should start by watching the presentation on civil wars. I also include below (in the folder) several articles that highlight key factors often correlated with internal conflicts. It would be beneficial to go over some of these articles, identify important variables and assess whether these are applicable in the cases of Syria and Yemen.

Your essay must include at least 5 different sources, one of the sources must be one of the articles provided below. You can use primary sources (news articles, magazine articles or reports) and/or secondary sources such as academic articles and books. The paper must be 4-5 pages long, not including the bibliography page. 20 points of the final grade will based on your writing (grammar and spelling mistakes), your ability to follow directions, and citations, so make sure you review your work carefully. Please note, you are not allowed to use direct quotes in this exam. Use your own words, you will lose .5 points for each direct quote in the text.

Country Analysis

You are an executive working at a large Canadian company that is considering expanding its foreign operations. The CEO has asked you to do an analysis of one of the target countries and provide a recommendation as to whether or not to proceed. The countries to choose from are Mexico, Egypt, France or Peru. The CEO is a very busy person so it is important that the report be written in a clear and concise manner. It will be judged on the factual information it contains, the clarity of your argument and the depth of your analysis. Please note that you should not try to gather data that supports only one side or the other of whether or not to proceed. Rather, you should gather all the pertinent data and let your analysis guide you to the best recommendation.
The report is to be a maximum of seven (7) pages (doubled spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt font, 2.54 cm margins) plus (i.e. not including) title page, bibliography (i.e. a list of your references – use my referencing guidelines below and posted in our cuLearn) and appendices (expected). The title page must contain your name, student number, name of course and professor, date, and the country you have chosen from the list provided. The first half page (maximum) of the report will be an executive summary of the report’s highlights and your recommendation. The remainder of the seven pages will cover the material noted in the grading table below with marks allocated as shown. Please use the items (left-hand column) listed in the rubric as headings in your report. You must number the pages in your report.
The report must cite at least six different sources (not including your textbook) which could include those listed in the library course guide, the globalEDGE, Website the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund  the CIA World Factbook , country websites, business journals, business newspapers, business websites, etc. Be wary of relying too heavily on any one source, especially a country’s own websites as they will most certainly put a positive spin on the material. Do not use Wikipedia. Ensure that all data is cited. In this report, there should be few if any quotes. If you do use a quote, ensure that it is in quotation marks and properly cited. If a quote is not in quotation marks and properly cited, it is plagiarism.
Only the first seven pages in your report will be read and graded. You may include relevant appendices at the end of the seven-page report (Appendices are expected, and go after the list of references. You must mention them in the body of your report).
Please note that Carleton University offers a Writing Tutorial Service through the Student Academic Success Centre that provides free face-to-face sessions to help you with your writing.
