ANTHROPOLOGY

Assignments should reflect the course material found in the course manual and textbooks. Students are welcomed to bring in their own research but must cite that material using APA. Students should note that assignment three is made up of two separate essays. And each essay should be around 1200 words.

The assignment is valued at 50% of your total grade.
Students are required to answer two of the following four questions.
Students are required to answer at least one question from Part One; however they may answer both questions from Part One if they wish. If students choose to complete only one question from Part One then they are required to complete one question from Part Two. So students have the following options: Answer questions one and two, one and three, one and four, two and three, or two and four.

Part One
1) In his book In Search of Respect Phillippe Bourgois examines the life of Puerto Rican immigrants living in East Harlem. Outline the history that brought these people to “El Barrio”, and discuss why their lack of cultural capital and structural racism makes it difficult to melt into the wider social milieu of American society.

2) In his book The Broken Fountain Belmonte looks at social life in inner city Naples. Here he finds a social group which is centred on a number of opposing relationships. Discuss these relationships and how they help people cope with their extreme levels of poverty.

Part Two
3) Discuss the social structure, social relationships, and social activities of boarders living in illegally operated boarding houses in St. John’s. Are boarders part of a homogeneous or heterogeneous community/society?

4) Discuss the failure of modern architecture and its effects on people in both the western and third world societies.

Ethical Egoism & Criminal Justice

The paper will ask students to apply one of the major ethical theories to a specific problem. For the paper students will be required to select a contemporary article applying virtue ethics, deontology, or utilitarianism to an ethical problem. Students will be required to discuss how the theory explains the problem, and critically assess how well the theory deals with the problem.

The paper should be not exceed five pages in length (double-spaced, with 1 inch margins, Times New Roman size 12 font).

I’d like to suggest to make the paper about critiquing egoism by using the case of police officers. You will need to discuss, at least briefly, how the different ethical theories provide us with more guidance and insight into how officers should act.

China’s new draft law on NGOs

China’s new draft law on NGOs will substantially limit the ability of a wide range of organizations to work in China. The key sticking point in the new law is that it places regulatory authority over foreign NGOs with China’s State Security Bureau, rather than the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which regulates domestic NGOs. Police will be allowed to enter and inspect offices, and seize documents and equipment. The United States has long been critical of China’s record on human rights, and this proposed law, which was released for comment on June 8, will be a focal point in that discussion.

China’s response to U.S. pressure on this issue will likely turn on its view that foreign elements are stirring up trouble in China. This is the same argument that China used to explain the Occupy Central pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong. Reading between the lines, it is clear that in both instances, when China says “foreign elements,” it means the United States and its allies

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

These are the following requirements for the essay thank you!

In this task, you will write a literary analysis essay (1,000−1,200 words) that explores a specific idea or aspect of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Ensure that you state the thesis (or argument) of your essay clearly and that the thesis presents a unique or original interpretation of the play.

Planning

Before you start crafting your essay, recall that a literary analysis is a type of argument. A debatable claim is proposed and then supported with evidence from the text. A literary analysis is used to interpret and analyze a text and not to just offer an opinion. When you write a literary analysis, it helps to develop your critical reading skills by analyzing and interpreting the work. The thesis or central argument should be discussed throughout the paper. The argument must be adequately supported with evidence from the text.

You may want to look at web sources for help on crafting your essay, such as this discussion of writing about literature. Please follow the steps in the Process section below as you plan and write your literary analysis paper.

Process

Follow the steps below to complete your essay, and use the links provided to assist with your research and writing.

Gathering sources

Before creating your thesis, begin gathering additional sources to build your argument and support your thesis. For each source, consider the following questions:

Who authored the document?
What is the purpose of the document?
When was the document written?
How will this document help your argument?
Reading and evaluating sources

Next, examine each source and think about how you will use it to support a thesis. Be an active researcher by asking the following questions about each source you reference:

What is the credibility of the source?
Is there any noticeable bias?
How does the argument differ from others you have read?
What is the value of the source to the topic you are investigating?
Developing your thesis statement

Now that you have analyzed sources to use as evidence, revisit the essay question. Then develop your thesis statement.

If you need additional guidance, many writing resources are available to help you create a strong thesis statement.

Forming your argument

Once you have a clear, strong thesis statement, develop your argument. Make a particular effort to match the evidence in your sources to the points in your argument.

Drafting your essay

As you write your paper, use quotations from and summaries of your sources to support your argument. Be careful to keep the following ideas in mind:

To avoid plagiarism, make sure to cite your sources properly with in-text citations as well as a works cited page.
When you finish, reread the essay to check for all of the points above, and then proofread it to be sure your work doesn’t contain errors in grammar or spelling.
The following notes will provide detailed instructions and additional context for this specific essay.

Choosing a focus and topic

Recall that the fundamental purpose of this analytical essay is to explain your understanding or interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. The analytical essay should explain how the drama conveys meaning and examine how one or more elements contribute to the meaning of the drama.

From the following list of elements of drama, choose one or two that you will focus on for your essay about Romeo and Juliet:

plot
characterization
setting
theme
dialogue
figurative language
structure
After you select the elements that you will focus on for your essay, brainstorm some potential topics. Choose a topic that is based on your interpretation of the work. Some examples of questions to consider during the planning phase of your essay include the following:

What theme or central idea is expressed by the work?
What ideas or images recur throughout the work?
How does the plot build suspense? Are the techniques of flashback or foreshadowing important to the story?
What types of conflict occur while the plot is unfolding?
How is the characterization important to the story? Are the characters symbolic or representative of something? Can the characters be compared?
How does the setting (time, scenery, and location) influence or contribute to the work? How does it impact the characters? Is there a relationship between the setting and the mood?
How does figurative language affect the work? How are figures of speech important to the meaning of the work?
Gathering sources

While writing the essay, refer to at least one secondary source (such as a critical or literary analysis from an author, scholar, or expert) that supports your argument about the play. You can find this type of analysis in your school or local library using an online tool such as Google Scholar or doing your own online searching. However, look closely at the source that you find to make sure that it is written by an expert with credentials and not by another student fulfilling a similar assignment.

Drafting a thesis

Construct a thesis, which can be refined as the paper progresses. The thesis should be specific, covering only what will be discussed in your essay. Your thesis should also be debatable and capable of being supported with evidence from the text.

Outlining your paper

Then, develop an outline—a plan of organization to use while drafting your essay. Each paragraph should contain an idea that helps explain the thesis. Each idea should be supported with textual evidence in the form of a summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation.

Drafting the essay

After you’ve developed your outline and gathered the evidence, consider these points while writing:

Try to be objective.
Write in third person.
Use present tense to discuss the drama.

poverty, health security, and communicable diseases

Select a program that you would like to develop in your community or city based on one of the six most prevalent serious health problems currently faced by communities today such as poverty, health security, and communicable diseases.

Based on your research, create a 2- to 3-page report in a Microsoft Word document including answers to the following questions:

Identify your chosen problem and why it is a health community concern?
Identify how you will assess the need for the program? What type of data will you review?
How do you determine the target audience? List any one goal and three objectives. What do you want to achieve when you develop the program? What will be the outcome? What is the purpose of developing goal and objectives?
How will you get people in the community involved to gain support for your proposal?
What realistic method will be used to market the program in your community? Keep in mind the location, transportation, parking, and type of building.
How will you implement the program? What type of “best practice” strategy will you include in your program?
What type of feedback will you gather to analyze, if the program was successful? Why accurate feedback is critical to make certain, the program is a success? How will you collect objective data?

Provide at least two scholarly resources taken from the South University Online Library to support your efforts and topic.

Support your responses with examples.

Social Marketing, Management

Part 1

Transparent and accountable governance and strong leadership are the cornerstones of successful public health operations and delivery of public health services.

Respond to the following questions in relation to governance and leadership:

What are the differences between governance and leadership?
What systems or processes should public health agencies utilize to ensure communication and accountability between their governing board and leaders? Justify your answers.

According to Kotter (2001), ” . . . leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems of action. Each has its own function and characteristic activities. Both are necessary for success in an increasingly complex and volatile business environment.”

Respond to the following questions in relation to management and leadership:

What are the differences between leadership and management?
Why do you think Kotter described leadership and management as complementary systems of action?

In recent years, the optimal management structure has shifted from a narrow span of control to a broad or wide span of control. Earlier, three to seven individuals were reporting to the same manager (narrow span), whereas today, it is common to have twenty or more staff members reporting to the same person (broad span), as stated in the course textbook.

Based on the readings for this week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following discussion points:

Identify at least one pro and one con for each span of control described above.
State, with reasons, which of the two structures you would recommend.

Part 2

Several decades ago, Kotler and Zaltman (1971) first used the term “social marketing” to describe the application of marketing theory to solve social- and health-related issues. Since then, social marketing has grown in popularity and usage within the public health community, including within national agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health departments. Some of the factors responsible for the success of national social marketing campaigns are the efficient use of financial resources to develop marketing strategies, consistent messages across geographic boundaries, and uniform evaluation measures.

Respond to the following discussion points in relation to social marketing campaigns:

What challenges might you expect when adapting a national social marketing campaign in your local community?
Recommend ways in which your local health department may address these challenges.
