When Should Italicization be Used in the Reference List in APA Style?

Formatting the reference list in APA style has always posed a challenge to many. Guess work can never be allowed especially where accurate and correct academic papers are required.

A reference list should be accurate in all aspects. In this posting, we show you how italicization should be applied in the references list:

  1. Book sources: The title of the book should always be italicized.
  2. Journal name: The name of the journal in which an article is published should always be in italics, say: The American Journal of Oncology Nurses
  3. Web-based sources: A good example for this is an article from a newspaper such as The New York Times. In this case, you italicize the newspaper name. Articles from web-pages should have their titles italicized.
