This is largely a “self” paper, thus no intense library research is required, and only one citation is necessary. The key resources needed are your own values, beliefs, opinions, and perceptions.
Apply these resources to write the following three sections:
1.Identify and explain your own values and beliefs regarding counseling-e.g., is it a constructive element in our lives and in society? How so (or how not)? What specific elements make it useful (or otherwise)? Expand and go beyond these questions toward explaining your own view of counseling in the “grand scheme” of human experience, in society, and in your own life.
2. Identify and briefly describe a theory/approach to counseling that “fits” your personal beliefs and values. Detail elements of your chosen theory that coincide with your beliefs; be specific when describing the fit of your beliefs and the elements of the theory.
3.Describe the benefits and the limitations you perceive in your chosen theory, as it fits or deviates from your beliefs. Be critical here (in a constructive, academic sense, not in a destructive way), and be incisive.
Expectations:
1.Self-disclosure: In a paper of this nature, some degree of revelation of personal information is expected. What is not expected or desired is specific or detailed information that would be uncomfortable for you to share, or might otherwise compromise your sense of integrity.
2.Grading: Your clarity of expression–Your understanding of a chosen theory/approach to counseling–Your willingness to identify, critically analyze, and assess the fit of your values and beliefs with your chosen theory.
The purpose of this paper is to facilitate exploration of those beliefs and how they fit a theory/approach to counseling.
