Assignment Questions

Computer is not a synonym of technology

The assignment is for you to describe how you will survive for 6 months without computer based technology.
It is strongly recommended that you work on this before the end of the semester. This is intentionally vague; your assignment is to figure out what technologies don’t work, what you do not have, and how you will manage without whatever that is… The point of this assignment is twofold: 1. Are we the masters or slaves of our technology, and 2. “Computer” is not a synonym of technology, it is a form of technology. (If you start your paper with the phrase “I woke up and there was no technology” or something of that nature, your paper earns an immediate F, I do not even read it. You have technology, you simply do not have computer chip technology.
You wake up one morning, to…nothing. Your cell phone won’t turn on, you have no electricity, your car won’t crank. Anything that contains a computer chip will not work. (Also, in your plan, you may not rebuild a computer of any kind.) You don’t know that the catastrophe will last 6 months, information is one of the missing elements that you should address.

The first things you need to address are the three basic elements of survival: food, water, shelter. But you also need to address communication, transportation, any medical needs, economics, which includes work or school… basically how you will live without the technology of computers.

There is a catch: you must use available resources…. as in, if you do not own a generator, you cannot magically possess one. If you do not own a gun, or bow and arrows, AND do not know how to use them, you cannot magically suddenly have those powers…. if you have never hunted, you cannot do so now!
Your paper can be any form, you may write out a scenario, or use bullet points. Your grade will depend on how thoroughly and realistically you plan your life.
