Canadian Healthcare Policy/law

Answer the following questions in essay format, supporting your answers with references to the course materials and the literature. Be sure to cite all sources you use in your answers, and include a reference list at the end.

Q1)A patient diagnosed with schizophrenia is prescribed drug therapy and discharged. Two weeks later, the patient returns having exhibited delusional behaviour, and admits to having decided not to take the prescribed medication. Under what circumstances, if any, can the medication be given without the patient’s consent? If the patient is deemed not to be competent, to what extent, if any, is the patient’s previous decision not to take the medication relevant?
Q2)In British Columbia jurisdiction, when a review of patient care is undertaken for quality assurance (QA) purposes, is the QA information protected by information access and privacy legislation or by common law? In your answer, identify relevant sources of law, and discuss the strength and importance of the protection. Is it necessary to protect quality assurance information to ensure the full involvement of health professionals in the process of quality improvement? Explain why or why not.
Q3)In Canada, is the law settled as to who has the final say with respect to the treatment of incapacitated patients when the family and health care team disagree? Provide an example of a case where this issue was addressed by the courts in Canada. Whether or not the law is settled, in your opinion, who should have the final say: the family, the health care team, or the courts? Why, and should there be exceptions?
Q4) If a patient has a tumour surgically removed, can the excised tumour tissue be banked for future use and then used? Is the patient’s consent necessary? Identify the legal issues associated with the use of this type of material and the relevant sources of law.

Disorders of the Veins and Arteries

Assignment: Disorders of the Veins and Arteries
Advanced practice nurses often treat patients with vein and artery disorders such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT). While the symptoms of both disorders are noticeable, these symptoms are sometimes mistaken for signs of other conditions, making the disorders difficult to diagnose. Nurses must examine all symptoms and rule out other potential disorders before diagnosing and prescribing treatment for patients. In this Assignment, you explore the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of CVI and DVT.
To Prepare
Review the section “Diseases of the Veins” (pp. 598-599) in Chapter 23 of the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis. Consider the similarities and differences between these disorders.
Select a patient factor different from the one you selected in this week’s Discussion: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Think about how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of CVI and DVT. Reflect on how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
Review the “Mind Maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in the Week 2 Learning Resources. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct two mind maps—one for chronic venous insufficiency and one for venous thrombosis. Consider the epidemiology and clinical presentation of both chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis.
To Complete
Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
Compare the pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis. Describe how venous thrombosis is different from arterial thrombosis.
Explain how the patient factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of CVI and DVT. Describe how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
Construct two mind maps—one for chronic venous insufficiency and one for deep venous thrombosis. Include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, as well as the diagnosis and treatment you explained in your paper.

Budget Analysis Paper

Each student will analyze the budget and budgetary trends for a local government (city or county government). The paper will be formatted as follows:

-Overview and budget process and format
-Expenditure and revenue trends
-Conclusion and Recommendation

The primary source of data will be the budget of the government that you are analyzing. You may be able to get copies of these from the government. Finally, you might search newspaper indexes to find information on major recent budget issues.

Terrorism

Part A: Terrorism is a huge issue that we are facing in the United States. Explain the type of trial
proceeding an individual suspected of terrorism goes through when he/she is caught.

Part B: Research a case of an individual who was arrested for suspected terrorist activity and provide a summary of the trial proceeding and verdict of the case. Be sure that your summary provides details that illustrate the process that you described in part a. Be sure to specify what type of court this trial was held in.

Part C: Then explain how this trial may have proceed differently and/or ended with a different verdict if it had been held in another type of court. Provide facts about the other type of court to support your theory of the possible differences in the proceedings and/or verdict in another type of court.

American Culture

Write a paper concentrating on a revealing, significant, or unexpected similarity or difference in the textbook. The differences and similarities should be based on the experiences of Native Americans and white Americans or pertaining to both of these cultures’ stances on an issue you have chosen. You must base your comparison/contrast on one aspect of culture as it was expressed through Crazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors. The object of this paper is to clearly present one cultural issue, the two stances on the issue, and then discussion of what you are learning. Think about what you are reading and analyze it in your own way.

4 pages (minimum 300 WORDS EACH). Must have a thesis statement.

This is my thesis statement: “The dominant white European American lifestyle values conflicted with the Lakota Sioux causing the latter to be forced onto reservations.”

Then turn the thesis into a question:

In what ways did the white Euro-American lifestyle conflict with the lifestyle of the Lakota Sioux?

Then discuss the top three that you feel are the strongest reasons.

Ambrose, S. E. (1996). Crazy Horse and Custer: The parallel lives of two American warriors. New York: Anchor Books.

Part One
Consider the description of the Sun Dance on page 417 in the textbook. Contrast it with the descriptions earlier in the book of Custer’s moral teachings as a “Christian Soldier”. Identify the main differences that you see between the way Native Americans and European Americans approach religion. Are there any similarities? How do these very different ways of approaching religion affect the social behavior of Native Americans and of European Americans? Which group do you think is most true to its religious principles, and why? (200 words)

Part Two
How does religion define the way that people live their lives? How does it affect culture? Or, do you think culture affects religion? You may use your own experiences here. Be specific, but also identify whether your view stems from your personal understanding of religion, or whether it stems from an objective, non-personal view of religion. (150 words)
