Comparison Essay

You may choose to compare two stories, authors, characters, etc. For example, you may want to compare the role of religion, regional influences, or gender roles in the works of two different authors, or examine differences or similarities in the language, theme, plot, etc.
Paragraph 1 should include a brief biography of both authors and a 1-2 line synopsis of both subjects. Next, you should establish common ground between your two subjects (ex: Faulkner and Welty are both southern gothic writers, etc) This paragraph should end with a thesis statement that points out at least three similiarities or differences in the two works.

Paragraphs 2-4 should be a detailed discussion of the similarities or differences and include textual evidence (with page numbers) of your assertions whenever possible. For example, if you are examining the differences in how Faulkner and O’Connor deal with race or religion in their work you should quote from passages in the text that illustrate these differences.

The concluding paragraph should include a summary of the major ideas presented in the body of the paper and it should revisit the thesis statement.

Persuasive Essay

Elementary and secondary schools around the country are beginning to actively address the problem of bullies. In your opinion, is bullying an issue that should be addressed by schools or left to parents? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Compose an essay 800-1000 words in length. Your job is to convince me of your position and perhaps even sway me over to your way of thinking. In an effort to persuade, you should provide support from books, magazines, the internet, etc. that will strengthen your view.

Your essay must include at least 3 reasons to support your view. Additionally, you must provide outside sources (at least 3 no more than 6) to support your ideas. You should provide a Works Cited list of your resources at the end of your essay. Works Cited refers to any outside research you incorporate into your essay.

Keep this in mind…if you use an outside source in the essay, you must include it on the works cited page; however, DO NOT list a source on the works cited page and then not use it in the essay.

When you use a source (quoted or paraphrased), you should simple place the author’s last name or if there is no author use the first two or three words of the article title inside parentheses to indicate that you are using a source.

Bayesian Networks

Consider the following setting: the availability of a critical computer system is monitored by two independent mechanisms. One is sending ping packets over the network and raises an alarm if there is no return packet within a second. The second measures the temperature of the computer system and if it is below
a threshold it will raise an alarm (as the system is then probably not running).

The computer system itself is certified by the manufacturer to be up and running 99.9% of the time. The ping mechanism can be faulty as well, the likelihood for this is 1%. If the ping mechanism works correctly, it is reliable in showing uptime: if the critical computer system is up and the ping mechanism is not faulty, then in
9999 out of 10000 cases the ping mechanism will report the computer system to be up. It is less precise when the computer system is down, in that case even if the ping mechanism is not faulty, the ping mechanism will report the computer system to be down only in 700 out of 1000 cases. If the ping mechanism is faulty and the computer system is up, then the ping mechanism will report the system to be up only in 1 out of 10000 cases. If the ping mechanism is faulty and the computer system is down, then the ping mechanism will however report the computer system to be unavailable in 800 out of 1000 cases. The reliability of the thermometer (the second mechanism) is influenced by the computer system, as it tends to be more faulty with high temperature (so when the system is available). In particular, when the temperature is above the threshold, the thermometer is faulty in 30% of all cases, while it is faulty only in 3% of the cases when the temperature is below the threshold. When the thermometer works correctly, it will identify high temperature correctly in 95 out of 100 cases, and it will identify low temperature correctly in 999 out of 1000 cases. If the thermometer is faulty, it will still identify high temperature correctly in 93% of all cases, but low temperature will be misidentified in 98% of all cases.
Create a Bayesian network that models this situation.

Answer the following questions:
_ How likely is it that the ping mechanism raises an alarm when the system
is available?
_ Both mechanisms signal unavailability of the computer system. How likely
is it that the computer system is really unavailable?
_ How likely is it that computer system unavailability goes undetected (i.e.
neither the ping mechanism nor the thermometer indicate unavailability
when the system is actually unavailable)?
_ The computer system is unavailable, but neither the ping mechanism nor
the thermometer indicate unavailability. How likely is it that the ping
mechanism is faulty? How likely is it that the thermometer is faulty?

What are some of the challenges with implementing a computer assisted coding program?
Be sure to provide citations and a reference list for any sources used in the format requested by your instructor.

Brain Dead and On Life Support

On February 25, 1990, a Florida woman named Terri Schiavo went into cardiac arrest, apparently triggered by a bulimic episode. She was eventually revived, but her brain had been deprived of oxygen for a long time. Brain scans indicated that there was no activity in her cerebral cortex, and she suffered from severe and permanent cerebral atrophy. Basically, Schiavo was in a vegetative state. Medical professionals determined that she would never again be able to move, talk, or respond in any way. To remain alive, she required a feeding tube, and there was no chance that her situation would ever improve.

On occasion, Schiavo’s eyes would move, and sometimes she would groan. Despite the doctors’ insistence to the contrary, her parents believed that these were signs that she was trying to communicate with them.

After 12 years, Schiavo’s husband argued that his wife would not have wanted to be kept alive with no feelings, sensations, or brain activity. Her parents, however, were very much against removing her feeding tube. Eventually, the case made its way to the courts, both in the state of Florida and at the federal level. By 2005, the courts found in favor of Schiavo’s husband, and the feeding tube was removed on March 18, 2005. Schiavo died 13 days later.

Why did Schiavo’s eyes sometimes move, and why did she groan? Although the parts of her brain that control thought, voluntary movement, and feeling were completely damaged, her brainstem was still intact. Her medulla and pons maintained her breathing and caused involuntary movements of her eyes and the occasional groans. Over the 15-year period that she was on a feeding tube, Schiavo’s medical costs may have topped $7 million (Arnst, 2003).

These questions were brought to popular conscience 25 years ago in the case of Terri Schiavo, and they persist today. In 2013, a 13-year-old girl who suffered complications after tonsil surgery was declared brain dead. There was a battle between her family, who wanted her to remain on life support, and the hospital’s policies regarding persons declared brain dead. In another complicated 2013–14 case in Texas, a pregnant EMT professional declared brain dead was kept alive for weeks, despite her spouse’s directives, which were based on her wishes should this situation arise. In this case, state laws designed to protect an unborn fetus came into consideration until doctors determined the fetus unviable.

What do you think? Choose ONE of the following question prompts for your INITIAL discussion post:

Decisions surrounding the medical response to patients declared brain dead are complex. What do you think about these issues?
What would you do if your spouse or loved one was declared brain dead but his or her body was being kept alive by medical equipment?
Whose decision should it be to remove a feeding tube?
Should medical care costs be a factor?
