Instructions

Write a step-by-step procedure that provides a lay audience with precise instructions for performing a particular task, preferably one specific to your major discipline. The task could involve operating a piece of machinery, using a software product, preparing a meal, or any other technical process.

The selection of your subject is critical to this assignment. Do not choose a task that is so simple that instructions are not required or so complicated that the layman could not be expected to complete it successfully. Choose an object or process that is complex enough to provide you with sufficient material for a detailed procedure, but not so large or technically complex that you can’t conceivably do it justice in the time allotted.

Do not choose a task for which instructions are readily available in an existing book, manual, or Internet site, such as baking a cake, driving to the airport, or operating a cell phone. The object of the assignment is for you to break a procedure down into individual steps yourself and present those steps in a comprehensible manner, not to duplicate an existing documented procedure using different words.

Consider what you would expect to see in actual published instructions for your selected task. Elements such as graphics, safety warnings, or a list of required tools and parts should be included if your subject demands it.

As always, the appearance of your final document and the craftsmanship that goes into it are important to your grade. When you design your document, consider the audience that would be using your instructions and the nature of the task users would be trying to perform. The inclusion of some graphical content in your project is required. Be sure to use correct safety language and symbology, if appropriate to your subject.

You can create your document in Word, Microsoft Publisher, or any other software, but be conscious of your fonts and other elements that might not reproduce exactly on another computer. A PDF file is your best bet for a deliverable, as it retains all font and page layout information.

Production Cost Analysis and Estimation Applied Problems

Please complete the following two applied problems:

Problem 1:

William is the owner of a small pizza shop and is thinking of increasing products and lowering costs. William’s pizza shop owns four ovens and the cost of the four ovens is $1,000. Each worker is paid $500 per week.

Show all of your calculations and processes. Describe your answer for each question in complete sentences, whenever it is necessary.

1. Which inputs are fixed and which are variable in the production function of William’s pizza shop? Over what ranges do there appear to be increasing, constant, and/or diminishing returns to the number of workers employed?
2. What number of workers appears to be most efficient in terms of pizza product per worker?
3. What number of workers appears to minimize the marginal cost of pizza production assuming that each pizza worker is paid $500 per week?
4. Why would marginal productivity decline when you hire more workers in the short run after a certain level?
5. How would expanding the business affect the economies of scale? When would you have constant returns to scale or diseconomies of scale? Describe your answer.

Problem 2:

The Paradise Shoes Company has estimated its weekly TVC function from data collected over the past several months, as TVC = 3450 + 20Q + 0.008Q2 where TVC represents the total variable cost and Q represents pairs of shoes produced per week. And its demand equation is Q = 4100 – 25P. The company is currently producing 1,000 pairs of shoes weekly and is considering expanding its output to 1,200 pairs of shoes weekly. To do this, it will have to lease another shoe-making machine ($2,000 per week fixed payment until the lease period ends).

Show all of your calculations and processes. Describe your answer for each item below in complete sentences, whenever it is necessary.

1. Describe and derive an expression for the marginal cost (MC) curve.
2. Describe and estimate the incremental costs of the extra 200 pairs per week (from 1,000 pairs to 1,200 pairs of shoes).
3. What are the profit-maximizing price and output levels for Paradise Shoes? Describe and calculate the profit-maximizing price and output.
4. Discuss whether or not Paradise Shoes should expand its output further beyond 1,200 pairs per week. State all assumptions and qualifications that underlie your recommendation.

Slut: The other 4- letter word

Each year since 2013 scantily-clad women, and some men, take to the streets in what are called “SlutWalks.” This is an effort to protest a culture in which the victim of a sexual assault is blamed, rather than the perpetrator. Hundreds of women in skimpy outfits — plunging necklines and the shortest of shorts — marched down the streets of several major cities around the world. SlutWalks began in April 2012 when a Toronto police officer suggested women should “avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.”

The previous year Syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh called a Georgetown student a “prostitute” and a “slut” after she testified before a Senate committee and called for federal health care coverage to include the cost of contraception. Limbaugh apologized, but it prompted a re-examination of the term, “slut.”

These are just two incidences that sparked debates about the use of the word ‘slut’. It is usually considered a derogatory term for women. But some say embracing the word helps remove its negative connotations. This week we are listening to an interview that discusses the movements use of the word “slut”. When listening to this interview, ask yourself how it applies to the discussion and research in this chapter. Answer five (5) of the following questions by drawing on the course content.

 Financial Statement / Audit Report Review

Select one (1) local government in your state or area and review the financial statements and audit report for the county or municipality. The financial statements of the government you selected should have at least three (3) funds. Refer to the continuing problem homework for Weeks 1 through 3 for this assignment.
