Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968 by Heda Margolius Kovaly

Heda Margolius Kovaly’s memoir details the effects that two of the twentieth century’s most destructive totalitarian ideologies had on individual lives. Both fascism and communism sought to liberate some groups of human beings while crushing others deemed to be enemies. Kovaly herself sees this process from both sides, first as a Jew in Auschwitz and then as one of the communist elite in post-war Czechoslovakia. Describe some of the ways that Kovaly portrays her and other individual’s efforts to cope under these two regimes. According to her, why did people who had suffered under Nazism turn around and support communism? Which of the three forces mentioned in the quote above does Kovaly consider the most powerful?

Persepolis vols. I and II by Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis recounts her childhood and early adulthood against the backdrop of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the subsequent Iran-Iraq war. This is a story with both local and global aspects. Through the 1979 Revolution, religious traditionalists attempted to redefine Iranian identity in fundamentalist Islamic terms against the “decadent” West. Much of Satrapi’s story relates how ordinary Iranians tried to deal with these changes in everyday life. How does Satrapi describe the Islamic revolutionary transformation of Iranian society after 1979, and how Iranians reacted to (and resisted) these changes? How does she describe the formation of her own identity against fundamentalism, both in Iran and as a “Third Worlder” living in Europe? What role did both fear and freedom play in this process? What, for Satrapi, does it mean to be free?

1. Discuss the work of comedy directors John Waters or the Farrelly Brothers. 3. Fearsome, mentally unstable women are central characters in Serial Mom, Sightseers, and King of Comedy. How does female madness function in one or both of these comedy films?

4. Male suffering, failure, and humiliation are integral to Kingpin, King of Comedy, Sightseers, and This is Spinal Tap. Why does the film comedy repeatedly offer such spectacles? Discuss at least two of our movies in your answer.

2. Based on the needs and/or ideas identified in the Somby’s Café Case Study under the page titled ‘Anna needs more help’, develop a set of eight interview questions that Anna can use for future interviews.
3. As part of the interview process, Anna would like to present a scenario to the ‘potential employee’ that would showcase their problem solving and communication techniques within the answer given. Develop a scenario (no more than 200 words) that Anna can use in the interview process and briefly describe the techniques that have been considered in writing the scenario.
4. In the café’s first year, Anna considered the training and development of the original staff. Using this as a basis create a 12-month training schedule that includes both existing training and development needs and potential needs/development that you consider are important for all employees at the café, now and in the future.
