Assignment Questions

integrated theory

Clearly outline the (2 or 3) theories you have chosen to form your Integrated Theory. Include a discussion of underlying assumptions, key concepts, the role of the therapist and therapeutic relationship, therapy process and particular techniques you would use. Describe how your chosen theories fit with each other, theoretically and practically, and address issues of cultural competence.
Describe the evolution of your chosen theories with particular attention to the contribution from and connection with other models and worldviews (e.g. cognitive-behavioural/humanist/ psychodynamic/post-modern).
Describe how your choice of theories aligns with your own worldview (and, if relevant, preferred counselling context, issues and population): Include a discussion of your cultural identity, values, beliefs, and assumptions about human nature, causes of psychological distress and well-being, and a process of therapeutic change. Clearly outline how your beliefs align (or not) with the assumptions, concepts and processes of your chosen theories.
This assignment requires you to adopt and adapt principles and techniques from two or three of the theories covered in class in order to articulate a theory that best fits with your personal values and your beliefs about human nature, therapeutic change and counselling/psychology. In articulating this theory I expect to see a clear link between such personal values and beliefs and the theories you choose. Ensure you include consideration of your cultural identity (in a broad sense) and how this too aligns with your chosen theories. Ensure you also consider the implications of your integrated theory and its strengths and/or weaknesses in relation to cultural competency for counselling/psychology practice in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
